Private Gudamakari Ethno-Cultural and Mythological Tour: Stories, Traditions & Local Cuisine – June to October

A private day trip to Gudamakari Gorge, a remote mountain region where local traditions and village life are still an important part of everyday life. During the tour, we will visit several villages on foot, learn about local stories and customs, and enjoy views of the Greater Caucasus Mountains, alpine meadows, and the Black Aragvi River.

Distance: Approx. 7 km

Walking Time: Approx. 4 hours

Difficulty: Easy

The route follows village roads and walking paths. Most of the walk is relatively flat, with a few uphill sections leading to viewpoints over the valley. The hike is suitable for anyone with a basic level of fitness.

 

Itinerary:

After departing from Tbilisi, we will drive to Gudamakari Gorge, a mountain region known for its villages, traditions and sacred stories of local shrines, preserved through generations of oral traditions. Our local guide will take us through the villages of Chokhi, Dumatskho, and Gamsi, following village roads and paths while learning about the history, customs, and everyday life of the valley. Along the way, there will be opportunities to enjoy views of the surrounding mountains, alpine meadows, and the Black Aragvi River. After the walk, we will visit a local guesthouse where we will enjoy a traditional lunch, taste regional dishes, and take part in a khinkali-making masterclass with our hosts before returning to Tbilisi in the evening.

 

Dress Code

As we will be visiting chapels and religious sites during the tour, we kindly ask participants to dress respectfully. Please avoid very short shorts, crop tops, sleeveless tops with large openings, or other overly revealing clothing. Comfortable outdoor clothing that covers the shoulders and reaches at least to the knees is recommended.

WEATHER

Georgian weather changes often and fast. For this reason, it’s essential to follow the weather forecast closely. Here is the weather forecast. Please check it the night before the tour to be well prepared.

WHAT TO WEAR

Please wear clothes appropriate to the weather. Hiking shoes are recommended.

FOOD & DRINKS
Always make sure you have enough drinking water. 1.5 – 2 liters should be enough for the day.
Please make sure to bring snacks to stay full before meal time. Additionally, we will also stop in the supermarket in the morning to make sure you have everything needed with you.

OTHER ESSENTIAL ITEMS
If you are prone to motion sickness, please have medicine with you.
Bring a day pack to carry important items with you. sun protection.
