Described as a “masterpiece of religious architecture and a major center of learning in the Middle Ages,” Haghpat Monastery, together with Sanahin Monastery, was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1996.
Stop 2 – 10th-century Sanahin Monastery. The name Sanahin translates as “this one is older than that one,” presumably reflecting the monastery’s claim to be older than nearby Haghpat. The complex is home to numerous khachkars (stones decorated with elaborate cross engravings) and bishops’ graves.
Stop 3 – Abandoned cable car station of Sanahin to Alaverdi village and cool views of Debed river valley and coper mining mountains.
Stop 4 – Local restaurant for lunch break.
Stop 5 – Akhtala Monastery and Fortress: Our final stop of the day will be Akhtala, a 10th-century Armenian Apostolic monastery and fortress that played an important role in protecting the northwestern regions of Armenia. It is one of the best-preserved fortresses in the country. The main church is especially famous for its highly artistic frescoes. After sightseeing, we will return to Tbilisi in the evening, marking the end of the tour.
