Stepantsminda (Kazbegi) is a townlet named after a Georgian Orthodox monk named Stephan, who constructed a hermitage at this location. The town stretches along the banks of the Terek River at the foot of Mount Kazbegi. The town’s main landmark is the Gergeti Trinity Church.
