Trail description: the hike leads through a picturesque forest along a stream. Hikers must cross the creek several times. The path leads slightly uphill, but the ascent is very manageable.

 

Itinerary:

We will leave Tbilisi in the morning and head to Tana Valley, also known as Ateni Sioni Gorge. On the way, we will stop to visit Uplistsikhe, an ancient rock-hewn settlement built on the bank of the Mtkvari River. From Uplistikshe, we will drive to Ateni Sioni, an early 7th-century church famous for beautiful frescoes.

Finally, we will reach the starting point of our hike. We will follow a narrow path leading through wild meadows and forests. On the way, we will cross a small creek several times. Usually, the water is shallow, but you may still need to remove your shoes. Once we reach Biisi Waterfall, we will have time to relax, take photos, and enjoy a small picnic. Bring your favorite snacks with you.
Return to Tbilisi in the evening. The end of the trip.

The Ateni Sioni Church is an early 7th-century Georgian Orthodox temple famous for its stunning frescoes - one of the best examples of Georgian painting.

Biisi Waterfall lies near the village of Biisi, Tana Gorge, at 1080 m.a.s.l. The waterfall is a perfect destination for relaxed hikes. The nearby famous Biisi "ice waterfall" is used for annual ice-climbing competitions.

How to prepare for the tour

MEETING TIME AND PLACE

We meet at 09:00 at  Samaia Garden. Please be on time. In case of any delays, please inform your guide. Otherwise, the group will depart without you.  

WEATHER

Georgian weather changes often and fast. For this reason, it's essential to follow the weather forecast closely. Here is the weather forecast. Please check it the night before the tour to be well prepared.  

 

WHAT TO WEAR

Please wear clothes appropriate to the weather. The trail we will hike is not very challenging. But it includes several stream crossings. Make sure to wear proper hiking boots. Depending on the depth of the snow, gaiters might be recommended. You can also bring a spare pair of socks or shoes to switch into if your hiking boots get wet.

 

FOOD & DRINKS

Always make sure you have enough drinking water. 1.5-2 litters should be enough for the day. Please make sure to bring snacks - sandwiches, dried fruit, sweets. They will help you maintain your energy level until late lunch. 

 

OTHER ESSENTIAL ITEMS

If you are prone to motion sickness, please have medicine with you. Bring a day pack to carry important items with you.
