Join us on an unforgettable day tour to David Gareja Monastery Complex and Georgian semi-desert! Let’s hike together around the Mravaltskaro Reservoir and admire the stunning rainbow hills surrounding it. We will also peak into the Natlismtsemeli Monastery.

Hiking included: YES – We will walk a short distance on the “Rainbow” hills. There is no clear walking path, and the terrain consists of sand and gravel. We recommend wearing proper hiking shoes to avoid slipping.

 

Itinerary:

We will leave Tbilisi early in the morning and head to Mravaltskaro Reservoir. Mravaltskaro is famed for the colorful, rainbow-like hills surrounding it. We will also visit Natlismtsemeli Monastery. The complex was originally established at the end of the 7th century. Nowadays, it’s one of the main pilgrimage sites in the region.

Finally, we will reach David Lavra – the main section of David Gareja Monastery Complex, founded in the 6th century (Please be aware that the monastery is partly on the territory of Azerbaijan. Some parts are unavailable for sightseeing). Time and weather permitting, we will also stroll across the “Rainbow Hills” surrounding the shrine.

We will finish our trip with a dinner in a local guesthouse in Udabno. The meal is NOT included in the price of the tour. You can order it a la carte. Return to Tbilisi. The end of the tour.

WHAT TO WEAR

Please wear clothes appropriate to the weather.
Hiking boots or sports shoes with a good grip are recommended.

Georgian customs require a strict dress code in monasteries. Women are obliged to cover their heads and legs. We recommend bringing one or two scarves for that purpose. Otherwise, you will have to wear communal clothes. Men must wear long trousers.

It can be muddy at rainbow hills. Having extra shoes are comfortable. Bring raincoats.

FOOD & DRINKS
Always make sure you have enough drinking water. 1.5 liter should be enough for one day.
Please bring snacks. We may stop for dinner on the way back to Tbilisi if we have time.

Let’s head to Dmanisi – Bolnisi region to explore some of the most crucial Georgian historical and archeological sites. We will visit the oldest extant church in Georgia to learn more about the formation of the Georgian language and the advent of Christianity in the Caucasus, explore the Dmanisi hominins discovery site, and, as a bonus, look into the history of German colonies in Georgia.

Itinerary:

We will start our trip with a visit to Dmanisi – an open-air museum dedicated to the earliest hominid dispersal beyond Africa (1.75 million years ago). Next, we will head to Bolnisi Sioni – a cathedral built in 478–493. It is the oldest extant church in Georgia, famous for its early medieval inscriptions in the Georgian alphabet. We will also visit the fantastic Bolnisi Museum and stroll the cobbled streets built in the 19th century by Germans from Swabia. Once we finish sightseeing, we will head to a local restaurant for late lunch/ dinner. Return to Tbilisi. The end of the tour.

Itinerary:

Early in the morning, we will head to the Samtskhe-Javakheti region in southwest Georgia. Our destination will be the area of Lake Paravani and Ninotsminda.

Since the 19th century, this area has been home to Doukhobors – a Spiritual Christian ethnoreligious group exiled from the Russian empire for their nonorthodox beliefs. By the end of the 19th century, there were around 10,000 Doukhobors in Georgia. Many of them left the country following the collapse of the Soviet Union.

During this trip, we will have an opportunity to look at the architecture Doukhobors left behind. We will visit the Doukhobor community center in Gorelovka village. It was once the house of Peter Kalmykov, son of Illarion Kalmykov (the first leader of the Doukhobors that settled in the area in 1841). We will also have lunch with a local family.

On the way back to Tbilisi,we will stop at Poka convert shop. Return to Tbilisi in the evening. The end of the tour.

Day 1 – 30 August, Saturday: Arrival

  • Arrival by Turkish Airlines at Tbilisi International Airport at 10:05 AM

  • Transfer: Tbilisi Airport → Tbilisi Hotel

  • Accommodation: 7 twin rooms + 1 single room with breakfast (3-star hotel)

  • Activity: Tbilisi old town city tour with English-speaking guide


Day 2 – 31 August: Tbilisi → Mestia

  • After breakfast, transfer to Mestia in a large minibus suitable for all guests and their luggage.

  • Stops during the trip for stretching and lunch stop at a restaurant (meals self-paid)

  • Evening: Dinner is included

  • Overnight in Mestia

 

Day 3 – 1 September: Mestia → Trail Start → Zhabeshi Trek

  • In the morning, after breakfast, the group will grab their lunch boxes and head to the trail starting point using three 4WD vehicles (each fits 6 passengers).

  • Group size: 15 people + 1 guide

Hiking Distance: 16.1 km (could be less, depending on where the cars drop off)
Elevation: 763 m uphill, 523 m downhill
Typical hiking time: 4–5 hours including breaks

  • Extra luggage will be transferred to the guesthouse in Zhabeshi ahead of time.

Day 4 – 2 September: Zhabeshi → Adishi

Elevation: 909 m up, 527 m down

Day 5 – 3 September: Adishi → Iprali

  • Distance: 18.7 km

  • Elevation: 860 m up, 1069 m down

  • After breakfast, the group takes their lunch boxes and begins hiking toward Iprali.

  • Shortly after departure, there will be a river crossing on horseback (included in the tour).

  • Luggage will be transferred to Iprali by car.

Day 6 – 4 September: Iprali → Ushguli

  • Distance: 12.4 km

  • Elevation: 677 m up, 436 m down

  • After breakfast, with lunch boxes, the group begins hiking to Ushguli.

  • Luggage will be transported to Ushguli by car.

Day 7 – 5 September: Ushguli → Tbilisi Transfer

  • After breakfast, return to Tbilisi by minibus.
