Reaching Mutso Fortress requires a 20-30 minute-long uphill walk on a steep mountain path.

Itinerary:

Day 1
Tbilisi – Datvisjvari Pass – Shatili – Anatori Burial Vaults

We will depart Tbilisi in the morning and head north to Khevsureti. Around noon our vehicle will reach Datvisjvari Pass – a high mountain pass at an elevation of 2689 m.a.s.l. The views from the top are among the most scenic in Georgia. From Datvisjvari Pass, we will descend towards Shatili, a historic highland village nested in the deep Arghuni Gorge. The settlement is a unique complex of fortified dwellings that served as a residential area and a fortress guarding the northeastern outskirts of the country. Later, we will continue to Anatori Burial Vaults – a fascinating memorial of Khevsuretian culture and beliefs. Overnight in a guesthouse.

Day 2
Mutso – Datvisjvari Pass – Tbilisi

We will start our day by exploring the historic village of Ardoti. Next, we will head to Mutso, another spectacular fortified settlement offering incredible history and views. We will hike up the hill for about 20–30 min (elevation gain of 115m) to get to the fortress. The hike is steep and challenging if you are out of shape, but the views are worth it. Once we finish sightseeing Mutso, we will start a picturesque drive back to Tbilisi. On the way, if we have enough time and energy, we can book a rafting tour on the Aragvi river (optional). Return to Tbilisi in the evening. The end of Khevsureti overnight tour.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE TOUR

MEETING TIME AND PLACE
We meet 8:00 at Samaia Garden. Please be on time. In case of any delays, please inform your guide. Otherwise, the group will depart without you.

GUESTHOUSE: PLEASE NOT THE AREA IS NOT DEVELOPED YET. Guesthouses are very basic. Please have your shampoo or toothbrush. 

WEATHER
Georgian weather changes often and fast. For this reason, it’s essential to follow the weather forecast closely. Here is the weather forecast.
Please check it the night before the tour to be well prepared.

WHAT TO WEAR
Please wear clothes appropriate to the weather. Bring layers. The days are warm in Khevsureti but the evenings can get chilly. Long sleeves, light jackets, and long trousers (on top of shorts and t-shirts) may come in handy. Bring sun cream, hats, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun. Wear walking/sports shoes for the hikes. Just in case, you may also pack a raincoat.

THE ROAD
The road to Khevsureti is difficult. It’s long, sometimes many hours in the car. It may even get scary as it runs along a deep canyon. If you are prone to motion sickness, bring the medicine and take it before the trip. We will be taking plenty of stops to take photos and to rest. If you need to stop, let your guide know. The drivers will stop as soon as they find a proper place for that.

FOOD & DRINKS
Always make sure you have enough drinking water. 1.5–2 liters should be enough for the day. Please make sure to bring snacks – sandwiches, dried fruit, and sweets for the road. They will help you maintain your energy between meals.
Food included: Breakfast on Day 2 and Dinner on Day 1 are included in the price of the tour. You will eat them in your guesthouse. The price doesn’t cover lunches, but you will have an opportunity to buy them locally.
Please let us know if you have any allergies or food preferences well in advance. We will let you know to what degree we can accommodate you. The food choice is limited in Khevsureti, so if you have some comfort food you can’t live without, please bring it with you.

MONEY
Bring CASH. There are no ATMs in Khevsureti, and people don’t accept credit cards. Lunch usually costs 20–25 GEL per person. You may also bring cash to spend on local souvenirs (20–50 gel).

OTHER ESSENTIAL ITEMS
If you are prone to motion sickness, please have medicine with you. Bring a daypack to carry important items with you. Khevsureti is very remote, so guesthouses are conserving electric energy, which they make using solar panels. You will be able to charge cameras, phones, and tablets. But leave hair dryers, electric shaving machines, and other similar devices at home.

Althuti Trail

Starting Point: Gergeti Trinity Church (approx. 2,200 meters / 7,218 feet elevation)
Ending Point: Althuti 3014 (3,014 meters / 9,888 feet elevation)
Distance: Approximately 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) one-way
Elevation Gain: Around 800 meters (2,625 feet)
Difficulty: Moderate
Estimated Time: 3 to 4 hours one-way

The trail begins with a steep ascent from Gergeti Trinity Church, gradually leveling out as you approach Althuti. The path is well-trodden and does not require technical climbing skills, but a good level of fitness is recommended.

 

 

Itinerary:

Day 1: Tbilisi – Stepantsminda – Gveleti Waterfall
Our journey begins with a scenic drive along the Georgian Military Highway, heading towards the mountainous region of Stepantsminda. Along the way, we’ll make stops at the picturesque Jinvali Reservoir, the historic Ananuri Fortress, and the panoramic viewpoint of Gudauri.
Upon arrival in Stepantsminda, we’ll embark on a short hike to the beautiful Gveleti Waterfall, tucked away in the dramatic Caucasus landscapes. After the hike, enjoy a local lunch and settle in for an overnight stay in Stepantsminda.

Day 2: Stepantsminda – Gergeti Trinity Church – Althuti Hike – Tbilisi
After breakfast, we’ll visit the iconic Gergeti Holy Trinity Church. Perched at 2,170 meters above sea level, this 14th-century monument offers breathtaking views and is one of Georgia’s most photographed landmarks.
From here, we’ll begin the Althuti hike, taking in the stunning alpine scenery as we ascend further into the high Caucasus. After the hike, we’ll return to Tbilisi in the evening.

Always make sure you have enough drinking water. 1.5–2 liters should be enough for the day. You will be able to buy bottled water in local supermarkets.
For lunch we make sure to have snacks prepared. In the evening we will visit a restaurant in Stepantsminda.

Hike to Diklo fortress – 8 km (round-way), an altitude gain of 368 m.

Day 1
Tbilisi – Gombori Pass – Lechuri – Abano Pass – Shenako – Diklo – Omalo

We will depart Tbilisi very early in the morning. Our drive will take us over Gombori Pass to the foothills of the Great Caucasus. Once we reach the village of Lechuri, we will turn off the asphalt road and follow an unpaved mountain route towards Abano Pass – the highest driveable mountain pass in the Caucasus (2,826 m.a.s.l.). Prepare for an EXTREMELY scenic yet DIFFICULT ride. It will take us a minimum of 3 hours to climb to the top of the pass and another 2 or 3 hours to reach our guesthouse. Upon arrival in Tusheti, we will head to our guesthouse in Omalo before exploring the area. e will visit the picturesque St. George Church in Shenako village and hike to the ruins of the Diklo Fortress. 

 

Day 2
Dartlo – Kvavlo tower – Bochorda – Panorama

Today, We will explore fortified village of Dartlo, hike to the remote Kvavlo, and explore nearby settlements. You will have plenty of opportunities to enjoy the local cuisine. You can go on a horse ride (optional) in the afternoon too. Goat Panorama – a scenic viewpoint from which lucky visitors might be able to spot wild mountain goats. Next, we will head to Bochorna – the highest settlement in Europe (2,345 m.a.s.l.).

 

Day 3
Omalo – Abano Pass – Lechuri – Tbilisi

Our last day in Tusheti will we will head back toward Tbilisi. Short breaks at scenic spots will help us to ease the ride. We will also stop to eat late lunch in a local restaurant. Return to Tbilisi late in the evening. The end of the tour.

It gets cold up there. You will need touring shoes (or trail shoes/trekking shoes) may come in handy. Bring sun cream, hats, and sunglasses to protect from the sun. Wear comfortable walking/ sports shoes for the hikes. Just in case, you may also pack a raincoat.

It’s long, bumpy, and requires many hours in the car. It may even get scary if it runs along a deep canyon. If you are prone to motion sickness, bring the meds and take them 1h before the ride. We will be taking plenty of stops to take photos and to rest. If you need to stop, let your guide know. We’ll stop as soon as they find a good place for that.

FOOD & DRINKS
Always make sure to have enough drinking water. 1.5-2 liters should be enough for Day 1. Also, make sure to bring snacks – sandwiches, dried fruit, and sweets for the road. They will help you maintain your energy levels. Amazing homemade Georgian cuisine is included in the price of the tour. We will eat them in your guesthouse. The price doesn’t cover lunches, but you may order them locally. There are no supermarkets in Tusheti. We will be eating homemade Georgian cuisine. Please let us know if you have food limitations well in advance. We will let you know to what degree we can accommodate you. The food choice is limited. If you are vegetarian, you cannot go without, please bring it with you.

BRING CASH
There are NO ATMs in Tusheti, and people accept only cash. Local costs up to 25- 65 GEL per person. You may also want to spend on local souvenirs (20-50 gel) or an optional horse ride.

OTHER
Do not expect to have mobile coverage everywhere. Due to motion sickness, please avoid using your phone. Bring a day pack to carry important items with you. Be prepared that people are conserving electric energy, which they mostly get from solar panels. You may experience issues with heaters, phones, and hot water, as well as washing machines, and other similar devices at home.
